Bark Out Loud: Would You Get A Dog Tattoo?

I spotted this photo and it got me thinking… would you ever get a tattoo of your dog’s portrait or name? Would you wait until after your dog had passed? What would you get?

I think I would, yes. Not a portrait, necessarily, as portrait tattoos actually kind of freak me out, when they’re people, anyway. I’d probably get Elka’s name, and her actual pawprint, though I’m not sure where. Or when. A memorial is when a lot of people get them, I suppose, but really I don’t want to think about it.
I plan on getting one. It will be of our rescue pitbull Mabel, who has forever changed the minds of many about how this breed truly is. I just need to find an artist that will be able to do her portrait justice
I already have a tattoo of two of my dogs that have passed. It looks like a family portrait with a frame around them and a fairy girl.

I’m looking at getting a flynn (boston terrier) behind my ear… just because I think he’s wonderful and having him around always makes me feel better… he’s only 8 months though so I’m going to wait til he’s an adult before I draw him up and take him to pain central (the tattooists!)
I have my dog’s name tattooed on my ankle. She was my first dog. I got it when she was still alive because I wanted to remember her when she was healthy. When we had to put her down, it was extremely difficult, but seeing that tattoo there reminded me of all the great years we had together. I would definitely get more tattoos in the future for my future dogs!
Dog related tattoos are becoming more and more common. A lot of people do it after they pass. I definitely plan on getting one (when they are still alive). I don’t think I can pull off an image of my three dogs (because what if it really doesn’t look like them?), but I want to get some type of symbol that shows what they mean to my. Maybe something like “unfailing love.”
I’m actually considering one right now. My fiancé and I adopted our first dog together, a beagle named Randal, and he is, of course, the best dog ever. I don’t think I’ll wait until he passes though; I like the idea of celebrating his life while he’s still alive.
It’s something I’ve really considered as something I would do when I didn’t have my dog with me any longer. It’s bizarre as I’m so not a tatt girl, but part of me would like to make sure she is always with me in a way.
Jennifer Aniston did it! http://justjared.buzznet.com/2011/06/25/jennifer-aniston-tattoo-norman/
and naturally, if a celebrity does it… it’s cool, right??!
Humm. never really thought about it before. I’m not really a tattoo kinda person, but it’s hard to say how I’d feel after my amazing dog wasn’t around anymore. Although having “Ammo” tattooed somewhere on me might send the wrong message. ha.
A tribute to Casey…

That’s awesome! I love Brian’s work.
I like the idea, however, I have 100′s of pictures and I might choose to honor her by making a donation to a rescue group or a group that funds spay and neuter clinics….it’s a gift that keeps on giving after me and my dog are no longer on the planet! Each person finds their own way to honor such a special relationship!
I am completely anti-tattoo but felt quite strongly about getting one of my dog’s paw print at some point. I know, totally contrary of me. Sadie is my first dog and I really want a way to have her with me at all times (even when she’s not). I’ve been thinking about it for a year or so. The only thing stopping me from doing it is finding the right person to draw the tattoo on me. I don’t think I would want just anyone to be responsible for a putting a permanent mark on my skin.
I would!! I have a Boston Terrier named Batman, and I’ve been wanting to get a tattoo of him as a cartoon, dressed up like Batman. (Now if someone could just pay for it…)
I have one, I got it after we lost our 8 year old pom to epilipsy. It’s her name with 2 paw prints on my wrist. I want to get another one on the other wrist, but have 4 dogs, and 3 cats, so want to something to symbolize all of them…just haven’t figured that out yet.
I just did! He’s alive and as goofy as ever!

I have my dog’s name “waffle” AND her paw prints tattooed on my leg.
I don’t ever plan on having children and i consider my dog to be my only child, so i have the tattoo for her.
I have a tattoo of my childhood dog Henry on my arm, as seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/magnusandfriends/4892485234/
He’s drawn sort of cartoon-style with angel wings.
I also plan to get one of my current dog Nikolai (who we call Niko). I want him to be drawn as a maneki neko (lucky cat / beckoning cat), only it will be a “maneki niko” – beckoning Nikolai, with his paw up. I’ll get him done on the inside of my wrist so you’ll be able to see him when my paw is beckoning.
I got a portrait done of my little guy who is very much alive and well and it’s seriously the most fucking amazing thing ever. If you’re in San Francisco and want a dog portrait done go to Jen Lee at tattoo city. Her work is phenomenal and her love of animals shows through in her pieces.

Wow! You’re not wrong. I just checked out Jen Lee at tattoo city. Her dog and cat tattoos are truly amazing. Shame I don’t live anywhere near San Fran.
I have a tattoo of my dog’s actual pawprint and a four leaf clover inside since her name is Clover.
YES! I just looking for THE idea.
