Maddie the Coonhound’s Tumblr is one of those fantastic gems that make me so glad the internet exists (despite what it’s doing to our grammar, spelling, and level of collective discourse). I don’t know a whole lot about Maddie (besides that she has great balance and a lot of patience), but I think there’s a lot going on behind that detached, pensive gaze.

  1. I’ve actually met Maddie and she is amazing. The sweetest little lady. I met her because she is currently traveling all across the US with her “dad” Theron Humphrey who is doing a project called This Wild Idea (thiswildidea.com)where he tries to meet one new person a day and spend that day documenting their life.

Anyone who likes Maddie should check out This Wild Idea, where you can propose yourself or someone you know for the project…and maybe get to meet her yourself!

  2. Oh my gosh…this is hysterical! Definitely will be sharing :) I love how she is so nonchalant about it.

  3. Thanks, Ash & Brittani! Theron’s project is really cool, and I’m sure Maggie’s having a blast tagging along. Her tumblr is definitely one I’ll be checking on the daily from now on.

  4. I’m so sick of these ‘look how ridiculous my dog looks!’ projects. She looks humiliated, and given that people are finding the images ‘hilarious’, I think we can say that she is being humiliated. Animals aren’t here for our amusement: stop trying to make the poor animal do things that you think make you look ‘cool’ and ‘clever’ and ‘whacky’ and just let her be an intelligent, dignified animal.

    • Thanks for your comment, SL. Personally, I don’t think dogs really experience the emotion of humiliation – one of the many reasons I love them so. I do think they enjoy doing fun tricks for rewards, though (which is what I see going on in these “look how ridiculous my dog looks” projects), and spending lots of time with their people, which is what Maddie has the great pleasure of doing as she travels cross-country with Theron. I actually think Maddie’s photos celebrate her intelligence and personality rather than mock her, but that’s just my opinion. To me, they are well-constructed, often beautiful photographs that bring joy to many by harming none.

  5. I can’t stop laughing while scrolling down its tumblr page LOL
