I make my own hotspot powder, but Gold Bond's medicated powder works in a pinch. I've seen cremes before, but because they don't allow the affected area to breathe and dry out, they tend to make the hotspot worse.

While this was not the typical hot spot that my dogs get, it definitely was a hot spot. Lulu gets hot spot all the time and they do get crusty, even though they are moist to the touch. Itching, biting and scratching of hot spots can cause opening of the skin, which then can cause some scabbing, thus the "crusties." This has been my experience with my dogs.

I've never used a powder before, but I like that idea. Makes sense. I've only ever used a spray in the past, which I thought was just OK.

A hotspot is an acute moist dermatitis - it should be red, wet, and raw. A hotspot would not be crusty unless it was already healed. Hotspots should be treated with a powder, not a salve or creme, as it's very important to dry the area before it can heal!
